Praying in Song

Having read many of the Psalms, I have noticed over and over that many of them are prayers turned into a song or vice versa. Many of the hymns in our song books read like prayers. The following prayer has been constructed using the titles of spiritual songs and lyrics from various hymns. Sometimes it is good to pray through some of the prayers found in the Psalms. This same thing can be done by praying the lyrics of the songs in our hymnals.

O Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Abide with me: fast falls the eventide;
the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide….
I need thy presence every passing hour
…I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless,

What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
leaning on the everlasting arms?

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
forgive our foolish ways;
reclothe us in our rightful mind,

Guide me, O my great Jehovah,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but you are mighty;
hold me with your powerful hand.

I need thee every hour,
most gracious Lord;
I need thee every hour,
stay thou near by;
temptations lose their power
when thou art nigh.

Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I’m tired, I’m weak, I’m lone
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

Take my life and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in endless praise,

When he shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in him be found,
dressed in his righteousness alone,
faultless to stand before the throne.

O Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
the clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend;
even so, it is well with my soul.

– Amen
